Telecom says it has now restored most of its broadband internet service. The system crashed late yesterday, cutting off hundreds of thousands of business and domestic customers.
Telecom's Mark Watts says most customers were able to go back online in the early hours of this morning.
He says the outage did not extend to Telecom's cell phones or fixed lines.
Telecom staff worked through the night to restore services after problems caused by a fault in a central Auckland exchange.
Mr Watts says the company is now trying to isolate the exact cause. He says the company has some thoughts on what caused it, and will get to the bottom of the matter as soon as it can.
