Jonny Gladwell is prepared to brave the freezing temperatures and camp outside the Vodafone shop on Queen St for two and a half nights if it means he will be the first person in the world to own the Apple iPhone 3G.
The 22-year-old AUT physiotherapy student was one of four people set up outside the store last night.
Mr Gladwell's friends bet him that he couldn't last in first position until midnight tomorrow, when the new-model iPhone goes on sale in New Zealand before any other country.
As part of the dare, his mates have to bring him meals and stand in for him when he needs to use the toilet.
If he completes the challenge, his mates will buy him the phone.
"It's uni holidays so I don't have to be anywhere else, " Mr Gladwell said.
"I'm really just doing it to be able to say that I'm the first one in the world with one of these phones."
He set up a tent outside the store and had a laptop and books to keep him occupied. His parents stopped off to give him a deck chair.
"I think he's mad," his mother told the Herald.
Also in line was Evert Bruyns, 24, who plans to buy two iPhones.
He says he will give one to someone who missed out, and the other one to someone through his wishcollector.com website.
