KEY POINTS:
Nothing gets gamers' fists clenched more than a list claiming to be the ultimate guide to the best ever games.
The leading UK computer and games magazine Edge received thousands of votes in a bid to sort out the list to end all lists.
And what was number one?
Some recent third-gen console game? Perhaps one of the great PS2 games of all time like God of War or Ratchet and Clank? Maybe a Nintendo classic like one of the Mario games? The best ever Xbox classic Halo 1 or 2?
Nope.
Time travel to ten years past and if you're old enough to remember, you'll be surprised to learn the winner is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
It came out in 1998 for the wonderful old Nintendo 64 console, the N64 -still one of my favourites.
Numero Uno is a 3D fantasy RPG in which the hero and player character named Link must stop the evil Ganondorf from obtaining a magical object made of three golden triangles, which can be used to control the land where the game is set and does so by travelling through time. Seems like it travelled widely to populate our top 10 list today, amongst others.
It was an instant success and sold five million copies within six months and by now has sold more than 8 million.
There were also versions for GameCube. The good news for those who never played it is that it has been re-issued in some countries as a Wii game and you may find other downloadable games you liked in days past online for each console.
Five of the top 10 were Nintendo games and only one PC game made the top 10, which is a bit disappointing. That's the Valve classic Half Life 2 (though there are ports for many of the titles to other platforms). Some classics like Doom didn't feature. Halo made it to number seven.
So the top 10:
1: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
2: Resident Evil 4
3: Super Mario 64
4: Half Life 2
5: Super Mario World
6: Zelda: A Link to the past
7: Halo: Combat Evolved
8: Final Fantasy XII
9: Tetris
10: Super Metroid
