Apple fans everywhere were yesterday given a glimpse of their future - a sleeker, faster fourth-generation iPhone hailed as the "biggest leap" since the original.
Chief executive Steve Jobs revealed the new model, dubbed the iPhone 4, which will support video calls, is 24 per cent slimmer than its predecessor and has an improved display, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
He hailed the changes as the "biggest leap" the US technology giant had taken since the launch of the original iPhone.
"These phones are getting more and more intelligent about the world around them," Mr Jobs said.
The new video-calling function would set a "new standard for mobile communication", while the screen has "text looking like it does on a fine printed page".
It goes on sale on June 24 and will be available in New Zealand by the end of July.
The new iPhone 4 now has a front-facing camera as well as a rear-mounted five-megapixel camera with an LED flash.
The screen on the new iPhone has four times the resolution of the display on the iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4 can also record and edit high-definition video.
It has the same processor as the iPad, which means a faster phone. It also makes telephone calls.
