KEY POINTS:
Sony has lifted the lid on the new games due to release in coming months - some of them are very much a work in progress, still in production stages.
There is no announcement of anything particularly ground-breaking, but several familiar titles do get updated.
One of the most interesting is the PS3 title Siren: Blood Curse. It's a Japanese survival horror remake of an early PlayStation game. There was also the eerie sleeper hit Forbidden Siren on PS2.
The first trailer of the PS3 Siren gives an idea of its creepiness.
Set in a Japanese village called Hanuda, the story tells how an American TV crew arrive to research the legend of the 'Vanished Village' where human sacrifice is said to have taken place 30 years ago.
Players discover the horrific curse that haunts Hanuda and battle to save the village's survivors from the living dead. There are a couple of interesting features: a "sight-Jack system" to view events from the angle of your "undead" pursuers.
Unusually, it will be released in 12 episodic TV-style downloads. Is this the way of the future - for video games to compete with downloaded TV series? Tentatively a July release.
Another early exclusive PS3 title, Warhawk, gets a second expansion pack called Warhawk Operation Broken Mirror.
In this, players can mount turrets and drive vehicles like armoured personnel carriers in full-on battle environments like the new Vaporfield Glacier.
The war is decided across seven arenas, which are capable of hosting different-sized contingents of online players. Up to 32 can fight in Tundra Assault, while Olsavik Village is only designed for 4-8 player battles. Check out the downloadable demo on your PlayStation 3.
One of PS3's first titles, and one of the most controversial , Resistance: Fall of Man gets an update called Resistance 2. The emphasis this time is on online play. Team up in eight player co-op mode or in epic online battles involving up to 60 gamers.
The action has moved across the Atlantic and takes place in a devastated America ravaged by war and alien machines. Once again, the Chimera threaten the very future of mankind as the terrifying alternative history of Earth's last days continues to unfold. It is slated for release in November.
PS2 squad-based shooter SOCOM comes to the PS3 to be called SOCOM: Confrontation and out late this year.
It too will be online with multiplayer campaigns and once again using headsets to communicate.
Sony's key FPS Killzone 2 comes to PS3, with the ISA taking the war to the Helghast in an all-out assault on the hostile planet Helghan, where the Helghast will prove an even more formidable foe on their own turf.
You play as Sev, a battle-hardened veteran of Special Forces unit The Legion. Your mission: to secure Pyrrhus, Helghan's capital city.
You'll need to wait even beyond Christmas for that one - scheduled date is February next year.
LittleBigPlanet starts with players learning about their character's powers to interact physically with the environment. There are obstacles to explore, bits and pieces to collect and puzzles to solve - requiring a combination of brains and collaborative teamwork. As players begin to explore, their creative skills will grow and they will be ready to start creating and modifying their surroundings - the first step to sharing them with the whole community. Characters have the power to move anything in a glued and stitched-together landscape.
In echochrome, it's not what you see, it's the way that you see it - and the more pairs of eyes involved, the better your chances of solving dozens of puzzles. The world of echochrome consists of a series of crazy mazes inhabited by the endlessly wandering Walker. Your goal is to help him get where he wants to go - despite being faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles and hazards.
Sony is also releasing more Buzz versions and an online Singstar using the Eye camera.
New third party titles for PS3:
Mirror's Edge (EA) sounds like an interesting first person action-adventure. In a city where information is heavily monitored, agile couriers called Runners are used to transport sensitive data. In this seemingly utopian paradise, a crime has been committed and now you are being hunted. Players become a Runner called Faith, who traverses the vertigo-inducing cityscape, engaging in intense combat and fast-paced chases.
Ghostbusters (Vivendi) is an adventure written by original Ghostbusting legends Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (Stantz and Spengler from the original movie). Can you believe it was 1984 when that movie came out? I still remember the insidious shout of "Ghostbusters" from the catchy theme song. In the game, you track, trap and wrangle paranormal threats with upgradeable weapons and gadgets. You can play solo, in teams or online.
Lego Batman: The Video Game (Warner Bros) Batman is built from bricks and Gotham City becomes a toy town overrun by villainous thugs and devious masterminds in this reshaping of the comic and movie world of Gotham.
Wall-E is a third party PS2 title (THQ) about Disney-Pixar's latest cartoon hero and a misfit band of robots on an intergalactic quest to deliver a message of hope from an all but forgotten world.
Anything there that makes you want to go out and buy a PS3?
