Kiwi scientists are investigating whether the next generation of wireless telecommunication - the much-vaunted 5G - could be harmful to us.
It comes after studies have continually failed to find any link between health effects such as cancer and electromagnetic radiation emitted from devices like cellphones.
The Massey University study will focus on 5G, a technology which may ultimately enable cell sites capable of connecting a million devices in just a square kilometre, compared with today's 4G cell sites that could handle up to 3000 devices.
Although New Zealand's first 4.5G mobile site was launched by Spark and Huawei this month, it's expected a 5G network will still be years away.
The research, funded by the Lottery Health Research Fund, is being carried out over the next year.
