Fiji Rugby’s new director sacked after controversial remarks on same-sex relationships

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has sacked its newly appointed director of rugby after she told local media that she opposed same-sex relationships among the national women’s team members.

Laijipa Naulivou, a pioneer in women’s rugby in Fiji, was announced as a replacement FRU board member on Saturday.

She told the Fiji Sun that “this gay problem” was one of the reasons the women’s national team was underperforming.

“Those who played with me know that I do not condone being gay for women in rugby,” she was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

In a statement on Thursday evening, the FRU board said that the “views expressed by Laijipa Naulivou are her personal opinions and do not reflect the official position of FRU”.

It said the FRU was committed to upholding the highest standards of governance, integrity, and accountability.

“In alignment with World Rugby’s core values of Discipline, Respect, Integrity, Passion, and Solidarity, FRU strongly promotes inclusion and non-discrimination as fundamental principles of the sport.”

The statement said that following recent developments, the FRU board of directors had made the decision to remove Naulivou as director of rugby.

“While she had tendered her resignation, the board determined that a firm stance was necessary to reinforce its commitment to upholding professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of Fiji Rugby.

“FRU categorically rejects any form of discrimination.”

It said the Fijian women’s rugby team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.

The statement added that FRU is dedicated to ensuring a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment for all, regardless of gender, background, or identity.
