NICKY Ward-Allen of Eltham has won the title of top New Zealand woman climber at the recent National Tree Climbing competitions in Blenheim.
Taking away the national women's title now lines her up to compete in the World Tree Climbing Championships in Chicago in July next year.
Nicky won the trophy after being declared Best All Round Climber in the womens division on Saturday November 21.
She took part in five preliminary events – a work climb, aerial rescue, throw line, footlock and belayed speed climb. From there she went into the finals against Eleanor O'Neill of Dunedin, who won the world womans title in 2006. Nicky beat her in a one off climb to take the title.
In May this year Nicky broke the worlds record for the footlock climb, in a time that has still not been beaten. She is now seeking sponsors to help her get to the world champs next year.
