Teen councillors sworn in

There were some fresh faces in Council Chambers last week as the group of new Stratford District Youth Councillors were sworn in on August 5.

Mayor Neil Volzke swore in 14 Youth Councillors on Tuesday who will be working with Sarah Hamilton, community development officer at Stratford District Council.

Sarah says that this year the Youth Council will be working a little differently with the addition of two new roles - "mentor" and "trainee". Sarah says these roles have been developed to allow a flow with those joining and those leaving the Youth Council.

This year's mentor is Logan Clarke who leaves next year to go to university. "Having been chairman previously he has lots to teach some of the newer members," Sarah says.

The trainee this year is Izac White from Stratford Primary School.

Christopher James, Youth Council secretary, is looking forward to working with the Youth Council again this year. "I think we have a great mix of people, with a great balance of those over 18 and out of school and those still studying."

While the youth councillors are now sworn in, the elections for their individual roles will not occur until next Tuesday (August 19).

The Stratford District Youth Councillors are Kate-lyn Edser, Kylie Petch, Rebekah Vogt, Antony Vogt, Savarna Pease, Samme-sara Marriner, Rachel Sutton, Jamie Chapman, Christopher James, Caleb Patterson, Josh Sheed, Izaak Trueman, Storm Savage and Melissa Coupe.
