The nine members of the New Zealand delegation to the recent Canadian Stratford's sister city reunion gathered last week to start preparations for the next Stratfords of the World reunion, which will be held here in Stratford in March 2010. David Walter is to chair the organising committee.
The group has just returned from a memorable week hosted by the people of Stratford in Ontario, Canada. The city mayor hosted the delegates and other dignitaries at a formal civic luncheon, visited local sights such as the Niagara Falls and nearby Menonnite areas. The group also explored the beautiful riverside garden-filled city of Stratford, and attended a Shakespeare play and other cultural events.
All were overwhelmed by the Canadian hospitality. On the final evening of the reunion the delegates were invited to a major outdoor military. Part of the programme was a special flag-raising ceremony performed by military bands and cadets, with flags of all the nations represented at the Stratford's reunion, including New Zealand. They felt greatly honoured by this special recognition.
Another highlight was a banquet and concert with items from all the six Stratfords represented (Canada (2), USA, England, Australia, and New Zealand). The New Zealand item included New Zealand songs featuring birds and love, and an audiovisual presentation to encourage folk from the other five Stratfords to come to the Taranaki's New Zealand reunion.
