Severe Weather Warning for Taranaki

MetService has released a severe weather warning for the region.
A strong north-easterly flow is expected to bring a very warm and moist airmass onto New Zealand today and tomorrow. The heaviest rain on Wednesday and Thursday is likely
to affect Northland, Mt Taranaki, the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty, Marlborough, Nelson, Buller and Westland.
Rain is expected to become heavy Wednesday evening, then ease Thursday morning. In the 15 hours from 9pm Wednesday to midday Thursday expect 100 to 150mm to accumulate. Peak intensities 30mm per hour likely.
A wind warning is also in place, with Northeast winds expected to rise to gale overnight and may reach severe gale in some places with gusts 120km/h or more from 9pm Wednesday to 9am Thursday.
Given the forecast the Taranaki Regional Council warns that rivers draining the Mountain will rise in response to this event and there may be moderate flooding within the river systems if the expected totals do occur. It is also likely that localised surface flooding will occur in some areas.
Residents are advised to take sensible precautions around their property, including securing any loose materials or objects. Motorists are encouraged to avoid driving in such windy conditions if possible. The use of high-sided vehicles and towing of caravans is discouraged. Boat owners are advised to check their craft and moorings are secure if it is safe to do so.
