While cheese rolls are a well known South Island treat, there will be cheese rolls of an entirely different kind as Eltham welcomes back New Zealand's only down hill cheese race.
Co-ordinator Michael Jago says this year's Eltham Cheese Day is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever. "Fonterra Eltham is busily working at creating the special cheese wheels that will be raced down the hill."
The cheese used is a special blend made specifically for the races.
The family day begins with a local market as well as plenty of activities for the children including face painting. Michael adds that there is still plenty of room for businesses to set up a stall for only $10 per spot.
The down hill races will begin from 11am, with different events for primary school students, secondary school students and adult competitors. "It is a steep hill so I do recommend some training before the day."
