It's a no go for the proposed new logo for Stratford District Council after councilors at last night's council meeting voted against adopting it. Councillors Viv Milner and Rob Thomson were the only two councilors who voted for adopting the logo, with their colleagues all clearly opposed to it. Councillor John Sandford says that he had received a lot of feedback regarding the proposed logo. "Are we going to be selling cars now?" he asked in pointing out the similarities between a local car dealership's logo and the proposed logo for council. Other feedback he had received, says Mr Sandford, was that the cost of replacing all the stationery was excessive. Councillor Kelvin Squire also raised the question of the cost, asking what the cost benefits would be in spending the money on the changed logo. "It is not in the best interests of the district," he says. Councillor Graham Kelly also felt that the logo was similar to a brand already on the market, making a comparision to a logo for a brand of beer. Chief executive officer, Sue Davidson, was not convinced that the logo was as similar to the other logos, pointing out that it is not the same view of the mountain on the car dealership firm's logo. Sue says that the younger generation appreciates the new logo and that the council staff had not indicated that it was a bad decision to change the logo.
Voting for the adoption of the new logo, Councillor Rob Thomson, says it has been a year since the discussions started so "it is time to make a decision". That decision was made, however it was with a clear vote against adopting the new logo.
