“The town had settlers immigrated via the Vogel immigration scheme from many different countries: English, Polish, Danish, German, Italian, Swiss. And many of these names are prominent in the area today.
“Māori already lived in the te Kōhanga Moa district and had established pā at Tarata and Pukerangiora.”
Committee member Karen Moratti said the weekend celebrations begin with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, which will be placed by the town’s rhododendron tree, she said.
“It is reported to be the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, alongside our Italian marble memorial cenotaph [commemorating] our fallen – creating a synergy of times of remembrance of both some of the terrible times we must not forget and a commemoration of 150 years and future to come.”
The fun doesn’t stop there, said Moratti.
“With a special parade, music, entertainment, static displays of vintage transport and machinery and fun free rides on a Clydesdale wagon and an impressive steam traction engine trailer.”
She said the Inglewood Town Hall will have a walk-through display, with cake-cutting and the launch of the jubilee book.
The following day, people can attend the Inglewood Rotary Club’s charity car show, car boot sale and a combined church service.
“We’ll also have a finale at the TET Stadium & Events Centre kicking off with a marching display, kids’ games, Schnidier Shield tournament (that has been played for 130 years!), Jubilee Mile competitive and community races and then an opportunity to have a photo opportunity with the Ranfurly Shield and to view the history of the rugby, athletics and TET Stadium.”
Moratti said it will be great to celebrate, with people encouraged to dress up in their best period costumes.
“It will be a fantastic weekend of fun, a special parade, music and entertainment and interesting displays, with our town celebrating 150 years.”
