Home-schooled Stratford girls cook up tasty fundraiser

Jess Burton, Naomi Short, Hannah Burroughs and Rebekah Burton have been baking hot cross as a camp fundraiser.

A group of keen bakers have been spending hours in the kitchen baking hot cross buns.

Hannah Burroughs, Jessica Burton and Naomi Short have been measuring ingredients and weighting dozens of buns and loaves in order to fundraise for a camp they will be attending in Waikanae later this month.

The girls, who are all home-schooled, each need to fundraise $250 for the camp and have learnt a range of skills during the fundraising mission, including marketing.

Hannah, 12, says she loves getting into the kitchen and trying out recipes and says making the buns has been enjoyable.

The girls have followed an Alison Holst recipe, doublingit to get around four dozen buns. They weigh each bun to make sure they are 100 grams and then glaze them once they are out of the oven.

"It's fun — it's quite a lot of work but it's great when you see them cooked. They taste pretty good," says Hannah.

The girls have been busy filling orders, including one of six dozen for Hannah's church. They sell them for $5 per half dozen and the camp costs $250 per person. The camp, Purely Girls, is a five day national event attended by 120 teenage girls.

The Christian camp features guest speakers, panel sessions and small group discussions as well as games and sports, a fashion show and a royal banquet. It is run by a team of volunteers, parents and adults who are also available to mentor and support the girls throughout the year.
