Leaving from the Stratford Fire Station the Firefighters' Ride for Cancer was in town on Wednesday morning as a part of the national fundraising event.
Firefighters and their families from all over New Zealand participate in the ride in memory of firefighters and New Zealanders who have been lost to cancer.
The group travelled up the country, starting from Bluff and heading north to Auckland, and have been gaining sponsorship and raising awareness in every town they go through.
Rob Appleton, one of the riders, says the event has had a great turn out of riders this year. "It keeps going from strength to strength. It's a great way to meet fantastic people, ride some fantastic roads, raise awareness of cancer and early health checks, and fire safety messages."
Last year the event included a leg from Whangamomona to Stratford, which involved some local riders. However, "this year we decided to take the coastal road around the mountain before heading through to Hamilton for something a bit different".
