Dedicated netballer honoured

Darleena Christie was recognised by Sport Taranaki in July as Volunteer of the Month after being nominated by her peers for her dedication to netball in the community.

Darleena was rewarded with a bouquet from Sentiments Flowers as well as a morning tea at her workplace from Andre's Pies and Patisserie.

Terry Long, events co-ordinator for Sport Taranaki, says Darleena was "a real stand out" candidate for the acknowledgement.

Darleena has been involved with netball in the Stratford community for more than 10 years and "has shown commitment to netball in all capacities from player to coach".

She has also taken on the roles of club co-ordinator, organiser fundraiser and floor controller.

While it took some encouragement for Darleena to accept the award from Sport Taranaki, Darleena says she is "blown away" by the recognition.

"All the girls in the club return season after season and obviously enjoy it, which is the important thing."

Terry says that "a lot of people benefit from Darleena's energy and enthusiasm, she really is one of a kind".
