Daffodil Day lunch a hit

The women of the Stratford Daffodil Day Committee say they are grateful to the many volunteers who have helped this year.

Raewyn Rooney, chairperson of the Stratford Daffodil Day Committee, says she is thrilled with how well this year's event went.

"Despite the less than perfect weather, we had a good turnout and it was lovely to see the hall packed with people enjoying a lunch with friends while supporting a great cause."

It will be a few weeks before the final amount raised is totalled up, with money coming in from various groups, raffles and other fundraising efforts, says Raewyn.

"The provisional total is a very impressive $16,800. That is going to go a long way in helping Taranaki cancer patients and their families."

With several new committee members this year, Raewyn says it has been a steep learning curve.

"We had nearly all new people when it came to the lunch section for example. They did a sterling job and are to be commended."

The whole event was a real team effort says Raewyn, who says the more experienced committee members were able to guide the newer ones.

"Every person was invaluable. Whether they had the experience or not, they each gave it their all and made it a fantastic day."

Raewyn says the new t-shirts worn by committee members looked awesome and plenty were sold.

"People saw us wearing them and were keen to buy them. It was a great way to show one of the items for sale in use, and it also helped people recognise who we were and what we were raising money for."

Merchandise sales have been particularly good this year overall, says Raewyn, and the pop up shop was particularly successful.

Raewyn, the luncheon could not have taken place without the support of the many sponsors.

"The generosity of Countdown Stratford, Stratford New World, Shakee Pear and Inkpot Cafe really helped us put on a great luncheon on the day. Not to mention the many home bakers and all the other sponsors who got behind the event and supported it from the start."

It is always nice to see the many rest home residents who come to the luncheon each year. She was particularly moved to be handed a poem written by one resident from a New Plymouth rest home.

"Moments like that really blow you away. You realise how many people appreciate the event and the charity being supported by it."

Raewyn says the lead up to this year's luncheon has been great.

"We have had lots of fun things happening in the weeks and days before the event. From a pop-up shop, to the fun flash mob in Stratford New World and of course the gorgeous window displays around town. It all adds to the atmosphere and anticipation and we thank everyone who got involved in some way."

Raewyn says a huge thanks is due to the many volunteers who gave up work for a day.

"They worked even harder for us, they were all great and we all enjoyed their company for the day. The final thank you must go to all the people in Stratford who supported us, who bought a lunch, or bunch of flowers, a pen, a daffodil, a raffle ticket or even just popped in to say hi and well done. Thank you for your support".
