Every year during Taranaki Anniversary weekend the NZ Cycle Festival Trust organises a programme of cycling-related events for both active and passive participation.
The premier event is the Surf Highway 100 km, this year travelling from New Plymouth to Hāwera.
Open to riders of all abilities, categories include solo, relay teams, bone collector teams, tandems and eBike, with an early start for slower riders. It is not a race, but rather has a focus on participation.
On the Sunday is the Opunake Lions downhill mountain bike ride, from Arawhata Road down to Opunake beach. A couple of weeks later is the Kaponga Lions ride.
In New Plymouth there is the NZ Cycle Show, exhibiting a range of old, eclectic and historic bikes.
