Call for patience if mountain road shut

"When the gates to the mountain are shut, they are shut for the safety of the public," says Barry Jagersma, roading asset manager for Stratford District Council.

Barry says that frustration is growing as members of the public continue to bypass the closed gates, "or worse try to damage and break them open" as they head up to the snow.

In the past the gates have been pushed over or cut open by members of the public, "we have recently had to replace the gate with a stronger one and with a more secure lock".

Barry says that while a fresh snowfall is tempting it also introduces dangerous driving conditions. "When we close the gates it is because the road is no longer safe to drive until the contractors have cleared it."

The contractors clear the snow from the road, the Stratford Mountain House carpark and the carpark at the plateau before the public is allowed on the road again.

Barry says that council and the contractors do their best to have snow clearing completed in a timely manner to ensure everyone can enjoy the snow. "We have an agreement with members of the Stratford Mountain Club who we allow up as we are working so they can prepare the ski field to be ready for the public."

In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set behind the mountain, wet roads freeze into black ice. "Again, we have to close the road to check there is enough traction for cars to safely drive, if not we may have to grit the road."

Barry says that while majority of skiers and snow sport enthusiasts come prepared, "with things like chains on their tyres," it is often family groups and first-time visitors who are a concern. "It is just a reminder to be mindful of others on that road and to heed any and all warnings."
