Big news stories are the inspiration this year in the annual McDonald Real Estate Canvas Challenge, opening on
Friday at the Percy Thomson Gallery in Stratford.
This year the McDonald Real Estate Challenge Shield - ``Hot off the Press'' has used newspaper as its theme.
Young people between 12-24 years have been challenged to use three primary colours plus black and white, a canvas and an allocated newspaper front page as inspiration to complete an artwork. There must be a
link between the newspaper and the finished artwork.
The participants had to write a few words explaining the creative journey the page has taken them on. These are
then judged and awarded first, second and third prizes, the McDonald Real Estate Challenge Shield and the
Stratford Art Society Prize by a panel of three.
``This is the ninth year the Percy Thomson Gallery has hosted this show involving schools and educational
groups. This is a great opportunity for the youth of the region to become involved in the gallery and experience
exhibiting in the space,'' says gallery director Sue Morton.
The canvases will be accompanied by an exciting display of art from more than 13 schools and learning groups
including early childcare and secondary pupils. Kaponga School is displaying wearable art of its own creation, Avon Primary printmaking and Marco School painted rocks and fabric printing among others.
``It is always rewarding to see the world through young, fresh eyes so make sure you don't miss this display of our upcoming artists' work,'' says Sue.
More than 10 award-winning or finalist fashion art garments will be modelled at the opening and award
presentation and later displayed in the gallery. The selection includes Wendy O'Keeffe and Marion Struthers'
(artists) Mardis Bras constructed of 180 pre-loved, hand dyed bras, sequins and beads; Tane's Tears by Sasafras - Marshall - Johnson; Maid of Armour designed by Hali and Paul Penberth; Poetry in Motion by Ali King; Jest Her designed by Ann Aitchison; Tin Ballerina designed by Elly Struthers; Elegant in Eggshells
on Raceday by Jill Nagel; Taranaki Cheer by Morgan Bell; The Milky Wave by Amelia Hutton; and Ann Aitchison's Completely in Tune.
``This amazing diverse and exciting exhibition is something not to be missed and all are welcome at the prize-
giving and opening at 7pm,'' says Sue.
