Dolly Hansen celebrated her birthday on Tuesday.
At 102, she is probably one of the oldest in her peer group, and then there would not be too many throughout New Zealand.
She celebrated with her only daughter Olive Neeham, grandchildren and great grandchildren at the MaryAnne Rest Home where she has lived since January.
One of 12 children, Dolly was born on July 3, 1905, at Wharehuia and named Josephine Sarah Bottin.
She married Harold Hansen and when he died in 1955, Dolly moved to Fenton Street and lived there until 1999.
A carer at the home, Jenny Loveridge said she knew Dolly years ago and her memory was of a grandmother who doted on her grandchildren.
Staff at the home said Dolly enjoyed music and her sweet tooth was testament to her enjoyment of food.
And if she did not like anything, Dolly pushed the carer away.
