New Zealand scored another bronze medal on day five of the Youth Olympic Games in China yesterday.
Swimming
New Zealand flagbearer Gabrielle Fa'amausili, 14, Auckland, followed her fellow 14-year-old teammate Bobbi Gichard, Hawkes Bay, on to the podium. Fa'amausili, from the Roskill club in Auckland, won the bronze medal inthe 50m backstroke in 28.69s. Gichard earlier won bronze in the 100m backstroke.
Golf
It was the third and last round of their respective competitions for golfers Julianne Alvarez, 18, Lower Hutt, and Nick Coxon, 18, Hamilton. Alvarez finished 7th, and Coxon finished 14th.
Sophia Dong, 16, and St Kitts teammate, T'Anje Johnson, fell 3-0 in her third round of the mixed team international competition. In her game against Belgian Lisa Lung, Dong was up 7-3 in the third set before losing.
The heat out on the beach volleyball court almost proved too much for Kahurangi Robinson and Nathaniel Moore against Jamaica in their fourth game of pool competition. The Kiwis won the first set 21-19 but struggled in the second, battling the Jamaican team for points and eventually losing the set. The third set was much stronger, the New Zealand team winning 15-6 to take the game.
The duo are third on the table.
Hockey
The women's hockey team lost 6-3 to Uruguay, pulling themselves back from a 4-point deficit.
