Andrew Murdoch and Andy Maloney are in contention for a medal in the Laser class at the Semaine Olympique Francaise regatta off the coast of Hyeres, France, heading into tonight's medal race.
Murdoch, who is New Zealand representative in the Laser at the London Olympics, is third and Maloney fourth but the top six sailors are all in contention. Regatta leader and four-time world champion Tom Slingsby of Australia has raced a consistent campaign and is odds-on to win gold.
Murdoch finished third in the only race of another day affected by strong winds, jumping ahead of Maloney on the overall standings. But only one point separates the Kiwis heading into the medal race which carries double points.
Dan Slater failed to finish in the only race of the day in the Finn but discarded that result meaning he slipped only one place to fifth. He is still in contention for a bronze if results go his way and fellow Kiwi Matt Coutts will join him in the medal race sitting in eighth place overall.
There was no racing in the 49ers, meaning Peter Burling and Blair Tuke finish the regatta in 13th and women's RS:X boardsailor will also miss the medal race after her two 18th-place finishes left her in 11th overall - the top 10 in each class contest the medal races.
