PARIS - Mari Cha IV, the super maxi yacht owned by British millionaire Robert Miller, has become the first monohull to sail more than 500 nautical miles in a day.
The crew of the 140-foot schooner is trying to break the record for sailing the Atlantic west to east.
It sailed 505 miles in the 24 hours to Monday morning, breaking the record of 484 miles set by illbruck in April 2002 during the Volvo Round the World Race.
The record for the west-east crossing of the Atlantic is eight days 20 hours 55 minutes and the Mari Cha website said on Monday that Miller's yacht was set to complete the voyage in well under eight days.
