Think great tries and the votes will vary wildly.

John Kirwan will get plenty for his solo effort against Italy when he scorched past startled defenders in the opening game at Eden Park in 1987.

If you prefer team tries, then France scored the "try from the end of the earth" against the All Blacks at Eden Park in 1994 when they surged from one end of the ground, one side to the other before Jean Luc Sadourny plunged across the line.

There was much to admire about one of Argentina's tries in their playoff match against host France at the 2007 tournament.

The Pumas were well beaten by the Boks in their semifinal and many of the 45,958 crowd at Parc des Princes felt they would struggle to get up for the 3rd and 4th place match against their hosts. Maybe it was just optimism from the French.

The same sides met in the opening game of the tournament where the Pumas prevailed 17-12 as they began their unbeaten run through their pool games. They had some classy backs-Agustin Pichot, Felipe Contepomi, Ignacio Corletto and a pack of rugged forwards who were as good as any in the tournament.

In their return game, the Pumas got the jump on France and rattled out to a good lead, forcing the hosts to chance their tactics. Aurelien Rougerie tried an attacking chip kick just inside the Pumas half but they cleaned up the loose ball.

Coreletto beat three defenders quickly and accelerated towards the French 22. When he was blocked he lobbed a pass inside where a teammates retrieved and moved the ball onto open space. Another massive 20m pass set the backs free on the other side of the park where Martin Aramburu skipped inside the last two tacklers for the touchdown.

The Argentine commentators gave their soccer counterparts a serious challenge with their protracted vocal applause for a terrific try, awarded by New Zealand referee Paul Honiss.

It gave the Pumas even more encouragement as they surged to a 34-10 triumph.
