The New Zealand bobsleigh team's pathway to the 2010 Winter Olympics takes another slippery twist at the venue of the 1980 Games when the world championships starts at Lake Placid in New York State on Sunday.
Held over two weekends, the fledgling New Zealand team's focus is on the four-man competition which is incorporated in the second phase of competition starting on March 1.
However, New Zealand have also entered the two-man competition where driver Alan Henderson will be partnered by one of four New Zealand-based athletes.
The two-man event will serve as valuable practice for Henderson ahead of the four-man competition.
New Zealand have borrowed a two-man sled from the United States team.
Former Olympian and national sprint champion Chris Donaldson, Tom Davie, Willie Trew and Sam Higgie will vie for spots behind Henderson while Carl Condliffe is the travelling reserve.
New Zealand's German-born coach Gerd Grimme is hoping for a top 10 placing as the inexperienced unit attempt to qualify for the Games in Vancouver next February.
New Zealand succeeded in qualifying for the world championships when finishing 16th in a Europa Cup event in St Moritz, Switzerland, late last month.
