New Zealand needed a team effort to beat a fired up Tongan men's team at the volleyball world championship Asian qualifying tournament in Porirua. New Zealand coach Tony Barnett called on his entire bench over the course of the match to win 3-1. The Kiwis dug deep in the fourth set and called on two young players Russell Gordon and Simon Petersen who opened up the smallest of leads and that was enough to secure the set and the match.
Gavin Kelsall and Ben Glue were the top scorers for New Zealand with 17 points each. For Tonga Isime'eli Tu'akoi topped the scoring with 15 points.
