New Zealander Hugh McCutcheon has been named coach of the year by the United States Olympic Committee. McCutcheon, formerly from Christchurch, guided the US men's volleyball team to an 8-0 record en route to winning the Olympic gold medal in Beijing last year. Early in the Games programme, his father-in-law was stabbed to death in the Chinese capital. Last December he became head coach of the US national women's team.
