New Zealand Olympian Nicky Samuels scored a dominating wire-to-wire victory on Saturday evening NZT in Tongyeong, Korea for her second career ITU World Cup title while fellow Kiwi Rebecca Kingsford raced impressively for 7th.
Following a successful two-woman bike breakaway with Korea's Yun-Jung Jang, Samuels held off the hard-charging Maria Czesnik (POL) and Yuka Sato (JPN) to take gold in a time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 51 seconds, the win and performance is a great boost for Samuels coming almost a month to the day out from the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final in Auckland.
A relatively small field of about 30 women kicked off the day with a two-lap, non-wetsuit swim in Tongyeong Bay where Samuels did not waste any time asserting herself as the one to beat, leading out of the water. Behind her were a host of up and coming talent, including home favourites Jang and Dong Hwa Chae, Sato, and Aussies Charlotte McShane, Natalie Van Coevorden and Tamsyn Moana-Veale.
Out onto the 5-lap, 40km bike course, Samuels and Jang broke from the field and surged to the lead. After the first lap, they built a 35-second lead, which grew to 50 seconds by the second.
The main chase pack in hot pursuit of the leaders included McShane, Ashlee Bailie (AUS), Van Coevorden, Rebecca Kingsford (NZL), Czesnik, Daria Pletikapa (CRO) and Anna Burova (RUS).
