ROTORUA - Watch out if any of the top men's seeds wake up for Saturday's New Zealand Ironman race in Taupo like triathlete Bryan Rhodes did in Malaysia earlier this year.
"I woke up and felt absolutely fantastic," said Rhodes of the day in Langkawi when he blitzed Ironman great Lothar Ledar by four minutes.
"If any of the (elite) guys wake up on Saturday like I did, any of them could take it out," said Rhodes, who is seeded fifth.
The Malaysian triumph was the former Commonwealth Games representatives first win on the international Ironman circuit and a welcome tonic moving into his home town race.
"It was an amazing confidence booster. He's (Ledar) the man to beat, he's one of the legends," Rhodes said.
"I know now what I have to do to win. That day (Malaysia) was perfect and I couldn't set my mind at a better place."
The win propelled Rhodes in the international spotlight and convinced himself he was a worthy competitor.
"I think I've got the right mix now. I worked on a few things and had a programme set daily that I've stuck to - bar the odd change for the weather."
