Triathlon NZ appoints Talent Development Leader

With significant changes to triathlon at Olympic level, specifically the inclusion of the Mixed Team Relay, the purpose of the Talent Development Leader role will be to ensure that New Zealand have a strong base of aspiring high performance athletes to meet or exceed Olympic, Commonwealth and World Championship medal targets for 2024.

Mark Elliott, High Performance Director at Triathlon New Zealand says that the main purpose of the role is to coordinate and align a talent identification development platform within the regional communities across New Zealand. This will involve developing a stronger connection with both athletes and coaches in the regions.

"We are very excited about Amys appointment it will really allow us to connect the talent across our athletes and coaches regionally with the priority objectives of the HP programme."

"Amy has an extensive background in sport development and coaching. She coaches a number of national level cyclists and has a strong sports science background. These factors will allow her to have positive development conversations with our passionate regional coaches."

Elliott says that the Future ChampioNZ Festival (which includes a Mixed Team Relay event) taking place in Taupo this weekend is a great example of the efforts already being made to identify and develop athletes and that Taylors appointment is another step in that process."

Taylors appointment is a half-time role and she will combine it with her role as Community Pathway Manager at Cycling New Zealand on the same basis.

Taylor is excited to take on the new role saying:

"Ive always been interested and involved in triathlon but Im fascinated with human development and how people transition though to become experts and world champions. Im interested in the systems they have around them and how they are influenced."

Taylor also sees opportunity in working at both organisations

"Besides the obvious synergies between the sports there is a real opportunity around sharing knowledge. The principals around developing young athletes are similar across all sports but even as a small country we dont really get the opportunity to share our learnings. With this direct link into both organisations, we can share information and learn from each other to create better outcomes."

Andrew Matheson, Chief Executive Officer of Cycling New Zealand is positive about the appointment.

"Cycling New Zealand is very supportive and sees this as an excellent opportunity for Triathlon and Cycling to work more closely together, share knowledge and expertise, plus provide another exciting challenge for Amy."

Taylor will start in her the new role on the January 22nd and will be based in Cambridge for both positions.
