The possibility that Olympic triathlon champion Hamish Carter may avoid the Commonwealth Games next year will not force a change in selection policy.
Carter has criticised Triathlon New Zealand's policy and suggested his response may be to withdraw from consideration. Three New Zealand men will contest the Games triathlon in Melbourne. Selection depends on performances at the world championships in Japan on September 10.
But Carter said that with so many top-quality New Zealanders in the field he could miss selection despite being in the top 15 if two fellow-countrymen finished ahead of him in Japan. Another qualifying race set aside for October dragged his season out too long. But TNZ said the policy was tough but fair.
