KEY POINTS:
New Zealander Terenzo Bozzone set a course record with a powerful run at the Vineman ironman race held in northern California on the weekend.
Bozzone clocked three hours, 49 minutes, 10 seconds in winning the Sonoma County event.
From the swim leg, Bozzone was in the chasing pack after leader Matt Clark.
The cycle leg saw the Aucklander lose touch with the leaders by about five minutes but by the halfway mark of the run, he had taken the lead and held on to beat runner-up Craig Alexander by 10 seconds.
"I decided to ride my own race today. So when I got caught by a bunch of guys at mile five, I just stayed with my plan," Bozzone said.
"I love this course and look forward to coming back again next year."
