Kiwis for Kiwi is running training sessions nationwide to condition hunting dogs against attacking our threatened national bird.
The organisation, which aims to protect kiwi populations from predators and restore their environment, has developed the training to counteract canine instinct to worry the flightless birds.
Training uses shocks and vibrations delivered via a dog collar.
Results on Stewart Island, where the tokoeka (Stewart Island kiwi) are numerous, have been excellent, says Hunting & Wildlife editor Mike Bradstock.
The Stewart Island/Rakiura Community Environment Trust is offering the training, supported by the Department of Conservation and several community groups including NZ Deer Stalkers' Association, which publishes Hunting & Wildlife.
