Third seed Venus Williams has won the US Open for the first time, beating compatriot Lindsay Davenport 6-4 7-5 at Flushing Meadow, New York.
Second seeded Davenport looked good in the first set of the rain-delayed match, breaking Williams' serve to race to a 4-1 lead.
But Williams broke back winning five consecutive games to take the set.
Davenport again got the early break in the second set to go up 2-1, but Williams broke again in the fourth game and managed to hold serve in a tough fifth game to go up 3-2.
Davenport played catch-up from there before her serve was broken a final time which saw Williams take the set 7-5 and seal a second Grand Slam title.
Williams' winning streak, which began at Wimbledon in July, now stands at 26 matches.
Meanwhile fourth-seeded Pete Sampras will meet sixth-seeded Russian Marat Safin in the men's final tomorrow.
Sampras despatched Australian Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets 7-6 6-4 7-6 earlier today, while Safin overcame American Todd Martin 6-3 7-6 7-6.
