Maria Sharapova regained the women's No 1 ranking yesterday after reaching the US Open semifinals, and Mary Pierce re-entered the top 10 for the first time in more than four years.
Sharapova reached No 1 for the first time on August 22, bumping Lindsay Davenport from the top spot for the first time since October.
But Davenport, who missed much of the season with a back injury, went back to No 1 the following week after winning at New Haven, Connecticut.
Among the men, Roger Federer, coming off his second straight US Open title, remained No 1.
He is followed by Rafael Nadal, Marat Safin, Andy Roddick and Lleyton Hewitt.
Andre Agassi, who lost to Federer in the final, is No 6, advancing one spot.
Sharapova lost in three sets to eventual champion Kim Clijsters at the Open.
Davenport, who was upset by last year's runner-up, Elena Dementieva, in the quarter-finals, dropped to No 2 in the rankings.
Pierce jumped six spots to No 6, her first appearance in the top 10 since April 1, 2001.
The 30-year-old beat French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, third-seeded Amelie Mauresmo and Dementieva at the Open to reach her second Grand Slam final this year before losing to Clijsters.
Clijsters moved up a spot to No 3, trading places with Mauresmo, on the strength of her win.
Henin-Hardenne climbed two spots to fifth, and Venus Williams jumped from No 10 to No 7.
