Svetlana Kuznetsova,Yanina Wickmayer and Monica Niculescu all won their first round matches to join top seed Sabine Lisicki and Flavia Pannetta in the next round.
Kuznetsova, the tournament's second seed, took some time to find her range against American Alison Riske before winning 6-3 6-2. She will meet another American, Christina McHale, in the second round.
Wickmayer dispatched Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic 6-3 6-4 on Court 4 and will take on Italy's Sara Erani while Niculescu beat Jamie Hampton of the US 7-6 (1) 6-1.
China's Peng Shuai, the tournament's second seed, is due on court this afternoon before fifth seed Julia Goerges takes on defending champion Greta Arn.
New Zealand No 1 Marina Erakovic plays her first round match against German Angelique Kerber tonight.
