Tennis: One-armed Kiwi player earns ATP point

One armed Kiwi tennis player Alex Hunt has earned his first ATP World ranking point.

The 23-year-old, who plays with a prosthetic lower left arm, beat Christopher Cajigan without dropping a game in round one of the US$15,000 ITF event in Guam.

Pleased with his form during the match, Hunt said 'the key was his ability to control his opponent's serve with his forehand and dominate points'.

Born in Nelson without a lower left arm, Hunt relies on a strong serve and forehand to build his game.

Hunt has been playing full time this year in Asia and Europe with the goal of maximising his ATP ranking.

His round two opponent is yet to be determined after the round one match between Masayoshi Ono or Hiroyasu Ehara was delayed due to rain.

Following the event in Guam, Hunt will base himself in Madrid, Spain for events in Europe.

The ITF Men's Circuit is a series of tennis tournaments that represents the lowest rung of the men's professional tennis ladder enabling young tennis players to earn ATP ranking points.
