New Zealand have taken a 2-0 lead over the Philippines after the first day of play in their Asia-Oceania group one Davis Cup tennis tie in Hawera today.
New Zealand's Rubin Statham won the first singles, beating Ruben Gonzales 6-4 6-4 6-4.
Michael Venus gave New Zealand their second win of the day in a match which went the distance before he beat former world No 72 Cecil Mamiit 6-7 7-6 6-3 4-6 6-3.
Tomorrow's doubles match will see Artem Sitak and Marcus Daniell take on Gonzales and Jonny Arcilla.
