The New Zealand Davis Cup team's suffered a shattering defeat to China in their Group One Asia/Oceania tie in Tianjin.
Having pulled the tie back to 2-1, Rubin Statham has squandered a two sets to love lead to lose the first of the reverse singles rubbers in five sets to Di Wu to give the hosts an unassailable 3-1 lead.
Captain Alistair Hunt said to lose after serving for the match is gutting.
"Long, lots of ups and downs - he sort of got back on serve in the third set but ended up losing 6-4 so that's what happens when we don't take our chances.''
And some new faces could force their way into the New Zealand Davis Cup team for their Asia/Oceania group one relegation playoff later this year.
