Patrick McEnroe received a two-year contract extension today to coach the title-starved United States Davis Cup tennis team.
During his six years as captain, the 40-year-old McEnroe has guided the US squad to the Davis Cup final in 2004 and semi-final appearances in 2002 and this year.
"We feel we're knocking on the door with one remaining goal, which is to return the Davis Cup to the United States," said Arlen Kantarian, US Tennis Associaiton (USTA) chief executive for pro tennis.
"We feel our chances are far greater with Patrick at the helm."
McEnroe has guided the US squad to a 9-6 record but the Americans have not won the title since 1995, their longest championship drought since the competition began in 1900.
The Americans open their 2007 Davis Cup campaign against the Czech Republic on February 9-11.
