New Zealand's representation at the US Open has come to an end with Marcus Daniell and his American doubles partner Brian Baker being defeated in the third round by the fourth seeds Jamie Murray (Britain) and Bruno Soares (Brazil)
Murray and Soares won the match in one hour 45 minutes 6-3 7-6(7) after Daniell and Baker had a set point at 6-5 in the tiebreak but a couple of good shots from their opponents put paid to any chance of a comeback.
However despite the result Daniell could see some benefits from the match and that they came close to taking the fourth seeds to a third set.
"We gave ourselves plenty of opportunities but missed by inches on every one. I feel like I played very well overall so can't be too unhappy about the loss. If I keep putting myself in these situations it will click eventually. This has been a positive tournament and I'm pumped to bring this form in to Davis Cup."
Daniell will now return to New Zealand to play Pakistan in the Asia/Oceania Davis Cup Group 1 tie in Christchurch 16-18 September.
