KEY POINTS:
Rain disrupted play on day one of the Pro Circuit tennis Futures in Hamilton but a couple of New Zealanders managed first round wins and another is poised for victory.
Davis Cup team member GD Jones easily put away his Australian opponent, David To 6-1 6-1 in gale-like conditions to move into the second round of the US$15,000 ($18,837) men's event.
Marcus Daniell, 18, also won in straight sets, dispatching the much higher ranked Arata Onozawa 6-2 6-1.
The win gives Daniell, from the Wairarapa, his second ATP ranking point after gaining his first in Eastern Europe last year.
Wellington 17-year-old Finn Tearney will have a nervous overnight wait, finding himself up 5-3 in the third set and serving at 15-40 against injured Australian qualifier Nick Trkulja who is struggling to serve and was teeing off on every shot to try to get the win quickly.
Trkulja won the first set 6-4 before Tearney came back 6-3 in the second as the Australian appeared to be hampered in his movement by injury.
Hutt Valley teen Amelia Harris was 4-4 in the first set but lost 6-4 6-2 while North Harbour's Briar Preston, 15, had her chances of a win before losing 7-6 6-2.
