Roger Federer has slumped to a shock quarterfinal loss at the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters.
The second seeded Swiss was beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Austrian Jurgen Melzer.
Federer said he didn't expect to play his very best in the first week.
Melzer will play Auckland's Heineken Open champion David Ferrer in the semis.
