New Zealand tennis junior Emily Fanning has been beaten in the first round of the junior singles at Wimbledon this morning 6-1 6-3 by Switzerland's Belinda Bencic.
Playing in her first Wimbledon, Fanning, aged 17 and ranked 43 in the ITF world juniors, made too many errors in the 53-minute match.
Bencic is aged just 15 but is ranked 21st and considered one of the rising stars of European tennis after making the semis at the build-up event in Roehampton and the quarters of Roland Garros juniors.
During the match, Fanning, from Timaru, hit 16 winners, but also 32 unforced errors, double that of Bencic.
Fanning will now play doubles with Ukrainian Oleksandra Korashvili. They take on Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus) and Donna Vekic (Croatia) in the first round.
