New Zealand tennis No1 Marina Erakovic has won through to the third round of Wimbledon singles for the second time in her career with a quality win overnight. However, her next opponent is yet to be confirmed.
Erakovic defeated 24th seed Peng Shuai from China7-6(6), 6-2 to match her best showing at the All England Club in 2008. Erakovic hit 24 winners in the match and served six aces in what was a solid effort on showcourt two.
There's a chance she could play her next match on an even bigger court if she faces Britain's Laura Robson. The Australian-born Robson, ranked 38 in the world has a held over match due to rain against 117th ranked Colombia's Mariana Duque-Marino with the winner due to play Erakovic on Saturday night (NZ time).
By making the third round of the singles it is expected Erakovic should see her current WTA singles ranking of 71 improve around 10 places.
Meanwhile, Erakovic and Cara Black are scheduled to play their second round doubles contest this evening against the talented pair of Canadian Eugenie Bouchard and Petra Martic (Croatia) fourth match on court five.
