Marina Erakovic has advanced to the third round at the French Open for the first time in her career after upsetting 16th-seed Dominika Cibulkova overnight (NZT).
The Kiwi No 1 beat Cibulkova in three sets 6-2 2-6 6-4 in a match that lasted two hours and 38 minutes but took more than five hours to complete because of two rain delays.
Erakovic went into the second-round match having lost the previous two meetings with the Slovakian but held her nerve in the final set to hand the 2012 French Open quarter-finalist an early exit.
She will now meet American 17th seed Sloane Stephens in the next round after Stephens defeated compatriot Vania King 6-1 6-3.
Erakovic powered through the first set against Cibulkova on the back of her strong forehand and serve but stumbled in the second set before the players were forced from the court by rain with Cibulkova up a break at 3-2. The Slovak quickly wrapped up the second set when they returned and led 2-0 early in the second set before Erakovic found her range again.
