Marina Erakovic has been upset in the first round of the US Open, being beaten by French wildcard Kristina Mladenovic 7-5 6-4 today.
The Kiwi No 1 was expected to progress against a player ranked more than 100 places below her. She made only three unforced errors but was put under pressure throughout and was broken four times.
Erakovic had the chance to get back in the match when she levelled 4-4 in the second set but was immediately broken to lose in one hour, 48 minutes.
Erakovic will now team up with Britain's Heather Watson in the doubles - the pair have won both WTA tournaments they have played together.
