New Zealand's last hope in the ASB Classic singles draw Marina Erakovic has been knocked out in the opening round today.
The New Zealand number two fell in straight sets to seventh seed Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-2.
Vesnina will now play either Simona Halep or Ayumi Morita in the second round.
Yesterday New Zealand number one Sacha Jones also lost in straight sets, going down to two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-2.
Erakovic remains in the doubles draw after winning her first round match with Swedish partner Sofia Arvidsson yesterday.
Earlier on centre court Spain's Carla Suarez-Navarro advanced to the second round with a 6-3 7-6(9-7) win over Italy's Romina Oprandi.
The marquee matchup today is the clash between defending champion Yanina Wickmayer and former world number one Dinara Safina.
